Another vendor section, the Challenger section was one the department's most exciting projects. The first stand-alone space center of its kind was being built in Peoria in cooperation with the Peoria school district. The section's purpose was to explain what the Challenger Learning Center was, create an interest in space travel and science, and to create awareness of its grand opening. Again, the department worked closely with the client in creating the section, yet the Custom Publications department was given much control over content and design. Famous NASA artist Robert McCall allowed the department to use his art for the cover. The Center booked up its tours for the entire year as a direct result of the awareness the section raised about the Center. This section generated $65,000 in revenue.
